Rescue Mission

I am so grateful that I was not abandoned in the problems I created for myself.

The other night very late I was channel surfing and came upon a very interesting program. The television show I found was a documentary about the astonishing efforts to make it possible for a severely obese man to have life saving surgery. The man was so large that an extensive amount of planning and coordination was required in order for him to have the needed operation. Accurate measurements were necessary to make sure that this bedridden man could fit in the ambulance to be transported from his home to the hospital. Nurses and other personnel had to have special training so that they would care for him in a manner that was safe for both the patient and staff. The operating table needed to be modified in order to accommodate the man's enormous body mass. It was even necessary to structurally reinforce the floors of the hospital to ensure that they would support the massive weight. This extensive amount of preparation was done so this man would not die as a result of being profoundly overweight.

I was impressed by the willingness of the dedicated professionals to do whatever it took to rescue this man from his desperate circumstances. I was touched because everyone worked hard to save this man's life. As they labored noone complained. Not one person ridiculed him. Nor did they assert that his condition was his own fault, and therefore he should be left to suffer the consequences,

In the actions and attitudes of the healthcare workers serving this obese man I saw a picture of the love and mercy of God. I certainly didn't deserve to be rescued from my sinful ways. Nor am I worthy of the grace that bestows blessings on my life.

The Bible instructs us that we are not saved by our own works, but rather eternal life is ours because of what Jesus did on our behalf. God did't wait for us to clean ourselves up or get our acts together before He met our need.
Romans 5:8 (New American Standard Bible)

8But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

John 3:16-17 (New American Standard Bible)

16"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
17"For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.

The example of these caring individuals on a mission to rescue someone from his self-destructive habit, reminded me of the kindness of God to send a Savior to redeem us from the devastation of sin.

I think this topic can be applied in the area of bad decision making, as well. If we will humble oursselves before the Lord, confessing that we have been wayward and foolish and then ask Him for His forgiveness, He will grant us mercy and grace. As believers, we can come before Him seeking His wisdom in our situations and petition Him to fix what we have "broken". He will not turn us away, ridicule us or leave us helpless. Yes, He does discipline us and sometimes administers tough love, but He is always kind, good and does what is right and perfect for each one who calls upon Him and places their trust in Him! kk
