God Values Variety

The diversity and splendor of God’s creation is amazing.
Yesterday I went to the zoo with a friend. It was a lovely day. The temperature was quite warm but there was a gentle refreshing breeze. The sun shined brightly as God held back the thunderstorms which meteorologists had forecast for the day.

There were many interesting sights to enjoy. We also had a delicious picnic lunch provided by my friend’s employer. One of my favorite things about a visit to the zoo is the special dolphin show. We attended the program and were seated in a central location in the arena. Since we were positioned directly in the path of the water that overflowed as the talented sea mammals performed their stunts, we ended up being soaked by those splashes. It was quite fun. Another highlight of the day was our time in the butterfly exhibit. I learned about types of butterflies that I had not known about previously. I was fascinated by the grace and beauty as the many colorful butterflies fluttered about.

I was in awe of the many different kinds of animals – from aardvarks to zebras. As I observed all of these creatures I was struck with the awareness that God loves variety. Not only are there many many types of animals, there are also great differences among humans as well. There is diversity of race and language. People come in all shapes and sizes. In fact, no two people are exactly the same. There are differences in physical characteristics and also distinctions of personality and temperament. This assortment and range observable in creation seems to indicate that God delights in variety.

This fact that God did not intend for us to be the same, can be liberating for those of us who may struggle with wishing we could be just like someone else. God made us unique for His pleasure and for a particular purpose. He delights in diversity. Rejoice in His wisdom in making you, and seek to pursue the destiny He has designed.

The Bible addresses variety and function in the body of Christ. (Read I Corinthians 12:4-25)
